Growing is journey that teaches lessons

Starting a homestead is an exciting and rewarding journey, but it’s also one that comes with plenty of learning curves. When I first started, I had big dreams of growing all my own food, raising animals, and living off the land—but reality had a few lessons in store for me. If I could go back in time, here’s what I’d tell myself and every aspiring homesteader out there.

1. Finding the Right Location Matters More Than You Think

Before you plant a single seed or build your first coop, take time to evaluate your land. Whether you’re buying a new property or working with what you already have, consider:

  • Soil Quality – Get a soil test before starting your garden. Healthy soil is the foundation of a productive homestead.

  • Water Access – Reliable water sources are critical for both livestock and gardening. Consider rainfall patterns, well access, or rain catchment systems.

  • Zoning Laws & Restrictions – Some areas have restrictions on livestock, building structures, or even home businesses. Always check before making plans.

  • Climate & Growing Conditions – Understanding your local growing zone will save you frustration. Some crops and livestock thrive in certain regions better than others.

My Lesson:

I only had one area flat enough for a garden, and unfortunately, the soil quality was poor. Since there was no other spot that would work, I had to focus on improving the soil right where it was. I learned the hard way that amending soil isn’t optional—it’s essential! Now, I always prioritize soil health from the beginning to set my garden up for success.

Don't go it alone on your growing journey

2. Prepare for Challenges – They Will Come!

Homesteading is full of surprises—some wonderful, some tough. Expect setbacks and know that resilience is key. Common beginner challenges include:

  • Weather Extremes – Droughts, floods, early frosts—nature has a mind of its own.

  • Livestock Issues – Sickness, predators, and unexpected costs can catch new homesteaders off guard.

  • Budget Overruns – It’s easy to spend more than planned, whether it’s on fencing, feed, or unexpected repairs.

  • Time Management – Homesteading is time-intensive, and balancing it with work, family, and rest is a challenge.

My Lesson:

Homesteading comes with unexpected challenges, no matter how much you plan. My first year, I lost an entire batch of young chickens to predators despite my best efforts. It was a tough lesson, but it taught me that challenges are inevitable—we just have to embrace them, learn from them, and keep moving forward. Now, predator-proofing is always a top priority, and I approach every setback as an opportunity to improve.

3. Build a Support Network

You don’t have to do it all alone! Having a strong support network can make a world of difference. Seek out:

  • Local Homesteading Groups – Connecting with others in your area gives you access to advice, shared resources, and even bartering opportunities.

  • Online Communities – Facebook groups, forums, and YouTube channels can provide valuable insights and troubleshooting help.

  • Mentors – Find an experienced homesteader who can offer guidance and help you avoid common pitfalls.

My Lesson:

When I started, I tried to figure everything out on my own, and it was overwhelming. Once I finally reached out to my neighbors and fellow growers, I learned faster, gained confidence, and even made friends who shared seeds and livestock with me! Finding a mentor—whether in person or online—can make a huge difference in your journey. If you're looking for guidance, I’d love to be that mentor for you! Reach out, ask questions, and let’s grow together.

4. Embrace the Learning Mindset

Homesteading is a constant learning experience. Some days you’ll feel like an expert, and other days you’ll wonder what you got yourself into. A few mindset shifts that helped me:

  • Be Patient – It takes time to build a thriving homestead. Progress happens in seasons, not overnight.

  • Learn from Failures – Every mistake teaches you something. Keep a homestead journal to track what works and what doesn’t.

  • Stay Curious – Read books, take courses, watch tutorials—never stop learning!

My Lesson:

I used to get frustrated when things didn’t go as planned, constantly striving for perfection. But I’ve learned that a perfectionist mindset will only hold you back. Homesteading is about progress, not perfection. Now, I see every challenge as a learning opportunity, celebrate small victories, and embrace the journey rather than chasing an impossible ideal.

5. Take Care of Yourself Too

Homesteading can be physically and emotionally demanding. It’s easy to get so caught up in taking care of animals, plants, and projects that you forget to care for yourself. Remember:

  • Don’t Burn Out – Prioritize rest and avoid overloading yourself with too many projects at once.

  • Eat Well – The goal is to grow food for your family—make sure you’re enjoying it too!

  • Ask for Help – Whether it’s from family, neighbors, or fellow homesteaders, don’t be afraid to lean on others.

My Lesson:

I used to push myself too hard, thinking I had to do everything all at once. My health suffered, which was the opposite of what I wanted this life to give me. Over time, I learned that homesteading is a family affair, and I don’t have to do everything alone. Now, I schedule breaks, enjoy what I’ve built, and remind myself that homesteading is a lifestyle, not a race.
